FOOD
Eating out in Spain is relatively cheap. The Spanish tradition of tapas is a really good way to experiment with the local food. Tapas are small dishes of food that is served anytime, especially in small bars. They cover various types of foods from meat, seafood and vegetables. Another of Spain's favourites is Serrano Ham, and Spanish are famous for its fish delicacies which simply must be tried, especially if you get to a coastal area. Paella has for a long time been one of the Spanish favourites, based on either seafood or meat. Every region of Spain has its own specialities.
 

Spanish people tend to eat traditional continental breakfasts, a light lunch and a late evening meal.
 

DRINK
Primarily Spain is a wine drinking country with each region producing its own The principal table wines are the riojas and valdepeñas, these are named after the regions they are produced. There are several large breweries within Spain producing the light, lager-like beers that are quite popular everywhere. Sherry is a favourite in Spain along with Cider and some popular brandy which is 103, Mango and Carlos.
 

A great deal of coffee is drunk in Spain. Cafe solo is served in small cups, and is a black coffee, which comes very strong and thick. Cortado is a Café solo with a little milk, Cafe con leche is coffee with milk. A large amount of bottled water is also drunk; there are two types which are con gas - fizzy water and sin gas - still water.
 

CONFORMITIES
Many of the old customs and traditions have not faded. Handshaking is the customary form of greeting and kisses on both cheeks are normal with the women. If you get invited to someone's home, a small gift is appreciated. Beachwear should be confined to the beach or poolside and shirts should be worn in public places. Smoking is widely accepted virtually everywhere but not on public transport.
 

FIESTAS
Everywhere from the big city's to the small villages in Spain dedicates a couple of days to celebrating the local fiesta. Usually the local Saint provides the reason for the celebrations, but any excuse will do.

There are also a couple in the Catholic events, most popular being the Semana Santa which stand for Holy week and is held in Southern Spain, you will see religious floats being carried through streets in a theatrical style which is then followed by hooded penitents atoning for the year's sins.
 

Every fiesta is different, in Pamplona in Basque Country they celebrate the 'running of the bulls' which is held in July; in Andalucia , horses, flamenco and guitars are integral to the celebrations. The fiesta of Las Fallas in March is held in Valencia, they have huge bonfires and fireworks displayed form the base of the party. The fiestas can get quire strange, with parades of devils or full blown water and tomato fights, which is loads of fun.
